| Length of this section (miles) | Total distance (miles) | Description | Photo |
| 0.86 | 0.86 | Take the A487 south from Aberystwyth.
Shortly after passing the 30mph speed
limits signs at Llanfarian turn left following the sign for Lôn Tyllwyd.
Turn right after 0.06 miles and follow the tarmac road.
| 0.2 | 1.08 | Adjacent to the entrance to
'Troedrhiw Cottage' the surface changes from tarmac
public highway to a gravel surfaced bridlepath.
After a further 0.2 miles the track passes a site of well managed
woodland where traditional woodland crafts can be seen.
| 0.4 | 1.49 | Then after 0.4 miles
more at the entrance to 'Craig Ebwch' bear to the right and down the
steep slope. | |
| 0.26 | 1.75 | You will now have to stop to open a wooden
gate. Travel through a short section of dedicated track (decoratively lined
with railway sleepers) before encountering another gate, and then follow
a concreted drive for a further 0.06 miles.
| 0.2 | 1.94 |
At this intersection keep
right and follow the signs for the bridleway for 0.2 miles where you follow
the right turn taking the bridge over the River Ystwyth. |
|
| 0.86 | 2.70 |
Immediately after crossing the bridge turn to the left where you will see
the cycle track. Follow the route (the old railway track) along the south side
of the river for 0.86 miles, where you will come to a minor road. |
|
| 0.28 | 2.98 | Cross this
road and after passing through the woooden gate opposite continue on the path
of the old railway track. After 0.28 miles a small bridge takes you over
a stream. | |
| 0.26 | 3.24 |
A further 0.11 miles will lead you to the Ystwyth trail's webcam in
Llanilar (wave at it, you're live on the web!) which is just 0.15
miles before the site of the old station at Llanilar.
Here you can see both of the old platforms, now overgrown. Look out for the
rusty railway carriage standing off to the side. |
|
| 2.45 | 5.69 | A very scenic and easy to ride section of the
trail runs for 2.45 miles
along the old railway track, until you meet the road.
| - | - | Cross the road and the track continues on the other side. The railway used to go over the road at this point, but they have just removed the bridge. | |
| - | - | The track runs past the chickens at the Birchgrove free range eggs site on your left. After a short while the track drops down, departing from the route of the railway.
| |
| - | - | The track meets the road at a small junction. Pass under the railway bridge.
| |
| 0.05 | 6.14 | Turn right at the crossroads just
before the main bridge over the river. A further 0.05 miles takes you
past the Forestry Commission's Black Covert picnic spot which is an
excellent place to stop for a walk through the woods.
| 0.95 | 7.09 | Continue for a further 0.8 miles
where you take the turn to the left. There is a post for a cycle route
sign here but when last seen the blue sign was missing. After another
0.15 miles a very steep hill (lowest gear needed!) takes you up to the
point on the hill where the old railway line crosses under the road.
Drop down to the left before the bridge onto the next completed
section of the Ystwyth trail.
| ?? | ?? | This is a lovely section of track through a wooded area with cuttings through the rock, and lots of new wooden benches.
| |
| ?? | ?? | Eventually the track forks. The right hand branch continues on along the disused railway but is eventually a dead end, fenced off. Lots of wildlife down here, including foxes. The left hand branch is signposted as the Ystwyth Trail and drops downhill quite steeply to the road.
| |
| ?? | ?? | From here you can turn left to follow Sustrans Route 81 (Lôn Cambria) continues or right to head towards Tregaron. If you turn left following the Sustrans Route 81 blue sign, take the next right which is a very small road towards Pontrhydygroes. The route is planned to continue on through the Elan Valley (some great tracks around the reservoir) and onwards to Shrewsbury.
